When Matt Harvey and crew released the sick and twisted Gore Metal onto the world, I was immediately hooked. As the lone member from that debut album, Harvey leads a new, gore-ious charge on Exhumed’s latest All Guts, No Glory.
Right out of the gate, the new line-up bludgeons away. Exhumed have mastered the tried and true death/gore metal elements; executing them to perfection. As my grandma would say, “If you’re going to make an apple pie, it better be the best damn pie you can make.” Well Exhumed bakes all the essentials – brutality, rage, energy, screams – into a bloody treat.
The vocals and guitar steal the show on this effort. You actually feel like you’ve been struck down on songs like ‘As Hammer to Anvil’. Solos have purpose and the evil chaos drives forward via Harvey and del Muerte’s vocal fireworks.
Not only is All Guts, No Glory one of their best efforts; it accomplishes something pretty rare – it actually gets better and sicker and crazier with each song. Yes, an album that pulls you in and sends you careening into the wall like a mis-timed ski jump.
‘I Rot Within’ is a turning point on the album; with brutal guitars that light the way to an even more intense ‘Dis-assembly Line’. The production on this album couldn’t be better. It allows the layers of sound to seep in while each note shines through the dark matter.
This is top-notch goregrind, with helpings of melody and perfect pace. All Guts, No Glory is a furious listen…just keep an eye on the speedometer – and that ski slope.
